Four types of gate — pick one per platform
Hold on a moment.
A short wait before the feed opens. Long enough to notice you're about to scroll.
Solve a quick problem first. Engages your brain before disengaging it.
breathe in
Three slow breaths before the app opens. Actually works.
Why are you opening this?
Write something to continue.
Why it works
The reflex happens before the decision
Most app opens happen in under a second — thumb moves before you've thought about it. The friction gate creates a gap between the impulse and the action. It's not a wall. It's just enough space to notice what you're about to do. Some people find they close the gate and put the phone down. They didn't need to open the app. They just needed to feel like they had the option.
No guilt. Just a pause.
The gate doesn't tell you whether to proceed. It doesn't show you how long you've already scrolled today. It doesn't say anything about your choices. It just slows you down. What happens next is up to you — and that's the point.
Gate types at a glance
Wait timer
5–30 second countdown before the app opens. Adjustable. The simplest and most effective for most people.
Math problem
Solve a short arithmetic problem to continue. Requires active thought, which interrupts the reflex loop.
Breathing exercise
Three guided breaths before the app opens. Good if you notice you reach for your phone when anxious or bored.
Intention journal
Type a reason before you open. Even one sentence. Surfaces how often you don't have a real reason.
